“Jesus Politics: Violence and Nonviolence” Digital Worship 9-6-20

As United Methodists, we believe war is incompatible with the teachings and example of Jesus. As his disciples, we are called to love our enemies, seek justice, and serve as reconcilers of conflict. Yet most of the time, we do not take Jesus or the Scriptures seriously on this issue. We’ll dig deeply again into the Gospel of Matthew, looking below the surface at why we justify war in our world today. We’ll learn more about the creative nonviolent resistance of Jesus. We’ll seek the truths of God as we help ourselves, our families, and our communities embark on the path of the Prince of Peace.

“Living Wesley’s Rules Today: Do No Harm” Digital Worship 8-16-20

When John Wesley started the United Societies in 1739, he felt it was vital to help these new
groups of people called Methodists live their lives (individually and collectively) as faithfully and
methodically (they were Methodists, after all!) as possible. So, Wesley developed what became
the “General Rules of the United Societies.” Today, we often refer to them as John Wesley’s
“Three Simple Rules.” For the next three weeks, with Bishop Reuben Job’s book Three Simple
Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living as our guide, we will explore how these rules are as important
to us as United Methodists today in this time of pandemic and turmoil as they were in 1739.

“Loving in a Pandemic” Digital Worship 8-9-20

As we continue with digital worship in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most
important issues surrounding our faith and the time we live in is “what does it mean to love our
neighbors?” This is a vitally important question to ask as masks and social distancing are now
seen more as a political statement than an act of care and love for our neighbors. Over the next
4 weeks, we will explore what Jesus meant by commanding us to be good neighbors and how we
can love our neighbors in creative, faithful ways.
